Advanced Spinal Surgeries

Advanced Spinal Surgeries

Causes:

Spinal pain may be caused by several reasons including abnormal development of the backbone, stress on the back, injury, or a physical disorder that affects the bones of the spine.

When to consider surgeries?

Usually, surgeries are not considered until other options have been exhausted, including rest, medication, and mild exercise and when an anatomical lesion has been crucially identified as the source of pain.

Type of surgery done:

  • It depends on the diagnosis. If needed back surgery aims to change patient’s anatomy in order to remove the cause of pain, such as removing a herniated disc with the purpose of providing relief.
  • Back surgeries vary, with some procedures minimally invasive and allowing for quick recovery and others more extensive and requiring longer recoveries.
  • Lumbar laminectomy and micro-discectomy are just a couple of back surgery examples.

Recovery :
Recovery after laminectomy and fusion surgery may be long. Patient will not be able to return to regular activities quickly. It takes at least 3 to 4 months after surgery for bones to heal well, and healing may continue for at least a year. If you had spinal fusion, you will probably be off work for 4 to 6 weeks if you are young and healthy and your job is not very strenuous. It may take 4 to 6 months for older people with more extensive surgery to get back to work. Length of recovery will also depend on how bad the patient’s condition was before surgery.
